West Coast Wilderness Lodge is located in the village of Egmont, at the confluence of the Sechelt and Jervis Inlets. We are located at the North end of the Sunshine Coast, an extremely popular tourist destination. Gibsons, of 'Beachcombers' fame, is a beautiful seaside community at the south end of the coast. Sechelt, mid-coast, is known for a variety of special events including the annual Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts. Pender Harbour is a scenic cluster of island cove communities and home to the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival.
Egmont itself has approximately 200 permanent residents. Local economic activity includes tourism, forestry, fishing and aggregate mining. The weather in Egmont is considerably warmer and drier than in Vanouver making it a wonderful place for any outdoor activity. Large mountains, beautiful warm lakes, islands, and coastal fjords draw tourists all year round for first class recreation.
The Sechelt Rapids at Skookumchuck Narrows
are one of the world's largest tidal rapids. The water flowing through
these narrows during tidal changes reaches speeds of up to 17 knots.
The tide changes create dramatic standing waves and whirlpools that attract
whitewater kayakers from around the world.
Thousands of visitors each year hike in to the Skookumchuck Narrows to view the rapids and the kayakers. Check the current speed and best viewing times. Due to its crystal clear waters and strong tidal currents, the waters of Sechelt Inlet are world-renowned for scuba diving.
Amenities nearby in Egmont include camping, the Backeddy Marina Resort Restaurant and Pub, and Bathgates' General Store. The staff at West Coast Wilderness Lodge will be happy to provide you with information about local art galleries, museums, restaurants, concerts and special events that you can visit on your trips to and from Egmont.
